What Does “5C” Mean?

All LiPo batteries have a manufacturer suggested charge rate, and the most common rate, up until now, has been “1C”, which can be determined with some simple math.

Let’s take a common 2200mah LiPo battery; to determine the correct charge rate, simply divide the mah (2200) by 1,000, and then multiply it against the manufacturer suggested charge rate. If the battery was rated at “1C”, the result would be 2.2 – (2200 divided by 1,000 = 2.2), as you would be multiplying 2.2 x 1. So, at a 1C rate, the safe maximum charge rate would be 2.2 amps of power – going beyond this charge rate could compromise the battery life span & power, and could be a safety hazard as well.

Drawing from the above formula, let’s take the same 2200mah battery as before, but calculate it at a 5C charge level, such as the new NRG 5C packs. As before, we simply divide the mah by 1,000 (2200 divided by 1,000 = 2.2), which gives us the same 2.2 number, but when we multiply 2.2 against 5 (2.2 x 5), we get a total of 11, which means that a 2200mah 5C LiPo pack could be safely charged at 11 amps of power, which is the true 5C rating of the battery.

What Does This Mean For Me?

In short, being able to charge your LiPo battery at a higher amperage rate means your battery will charge quicker, resulting in you being able to fly more. But, please keep in mind that your charger may simply not have enough power to charge a 5C battery at its fullest potential – in order to fully take advantage of 5C batteries, a high amperage charger is the best way to go.

What About The Other "C" Rating?

Aside from the "C" rating for charging, your battery also features a "C" rating for discharge, such as "15C," "20C," "25C," "35C," and so on. These figures are based on how much amperage your battery can "push out" during use, and have no basis on charging. In short, the higher the "C" rating for discharge, the more amperage your battery is capable of releasing during use. This is an important figure to know, as if you have an electric motor that can draw a high amount of amperage, you want to make sure your battery is capable of providing the proper amount of power within the limits of the battery.

How Do I Know How Much Amperage My Battery Can Deliver?

Again, we will use a simple formula, as before - divide the "mah" of the battery by 1,000 (let’s say a 2200mah battery), and multiply it against the "discharge" C rating of the battery. So, if we have a 2200mah "25C" battery (2200 divided by 1,000 = 2.2), we have 2.2 as our number, which we then multiply against the discharge rating of "25C," which gives us a number of 55. What this means is that at a 25C rating, the 2200mah battery is capable of delivering 55A of power.

In short, always check the maximum amount of amps your motor can draw, and make sure the battery you choose can provide enough power to the motor - for instance, if your motor can draw 40A of power, make sure your battery can deliver at least 40A of power. If the battery has more than enough amperage it can deliver, this will not be a problem, as the motor will only draw the amount it's rated for, and the extra amperage your battery is capable of delivering will simply not be used, allowing your battery to run cooler & last longer.
